Diagrammatic Reasoning About Linked Lists
نویسنده
چکیده
A recently developed theory of local reasoning with diagrams is applied to a practical domain, that of inserting a node into a singly linked list, to illustrate its explanatory power. Prior to this demonstration there was only an informal feel as to why diagrams used to explain the generation of imperative code for similar applications should work. This paper is a partial answer to the charge that theory in artiicial intelligence is remote from application. On the contrary, it shows that properly constrained theories can assist in underpinning cognitive tools.

Operationalizing Diagrammaticity
In this contribution we present a model for a component of a diagrammatic reasoning system. For reasons of identifying elementary components for diagrammatic reasoning processes we introduce the notions of the elementary diagrammatic inference step (EDIS) and the elementary diagrammatic simulation step (EDSS) as the basic processes for diagrammatic reasoning. The EDIS comprises several descript...

we explore different ways in which a computational model of diagrammatic reasoning can capture imagery experiences which subjects reported in an experiment on spatial reasoning. The algorithmic reconstruction of this particular reasoning process suggests that computational models of diagrammatic reasoning should be formulated at different levels of abstraction. Four levels are distinguished ord...
متن کاملReasoning with Diagrams: Final Report
The standard notation for modelling software systems is the Unified Modelling Language (UML). This consists of a suite of mainly diagrammatic notations. However, UML’s constraint language, OCL, is entirely textual, making the notation less accessible to practitioners. The Reasoning with Diagrams project aims to build the foundation for more accessible notations for practitioners, building on an...
متن کاملSpatial Logic and the Complexity of Diagrammatic Reasoning
Researchers have sought to explain the observed \eecacy" of diagrammatic reasoning (DR) via the notions of \limited abstraction" and inexpressivity 17, 20]. We argue that application of the concepts of computational complexity to systems of dia-grammatic representation is necessary for the evaluation of precise claims about their eecacy. We show here how to give such an analysis. Centrally, we ...

The study of diagrammatic reasoning often focuses on computational models of diagram use rather than on studies of human performance. This paper considers diagrams as a notational system that can be used and studied in an experimental context. It presents a review of the experimental psychology literature rather than a complete theoretical framework, and is intended as an introduction to the fi...
